The Dragons of Hurricane Iniki
Once upon a time there was a dragon and his family. The dad was named Kai. The mother’s name was Lily. The children’s names were Marco and Polo.
They lived in the ocean by Japan. They loved Japan, but also wanted to see other places and explore, so they decided to move to Kauai. They were swimming in the ocean, and felt rough seas above them, it was a hurricane named Iniki. It was a really bad storm. They knew they had to get to Kauai fast, so they swam as hard as they could. Right as they got close to Kauai, Kai was thrown in the air and fell down on a rock. He felt it shake, and he fell in the hole it made. He quickly got up and found his family, they had made it safely. They decided that the hole actually made a pretty good home and decided to rest there. Their hold made for a nice home because it was a cave under rocks, they had their own swimming hole and a little beach at the back.
The dragon family lived there for a few months and loved their home. Sometimes the waves got big and would crash over the rocks and come down the hole. One day a fisherman came in and he decided to fish in their hole. The dragons saw some bait come down from above and decided it made a good snack, they also worried that someone was going to get hurt on the rocks. When the fisherman realized his bait was gone, he put more on his line and threw it back down in the hole, Kai got worried and jumped up and the water exploded up with him. The fisherman was surprised. Kai caught the fisherman as Lily roared, Marco and Polo hid in the back of their rock cave.
The fisherman was scared. He grabbed his fishing pole and he started whacking the dragon. The dragon got mad, why was he hitting him? The fisherman froze while the dragon roared. The fisherman wanted to get out of there as fast as he could, so he got an idea. He threw the bait up on the shore, so the dragon would go get it, and he could sneak away.
But the dragon didn’t go. To the fisherman’s surprise the dragon talked. The dragon roared, “why are you hurting me when I am trying to save you.”
The fisherman said “you’re not trying to save me, you’re trying to eat me.”The dragon roared again “there’s a big wave coming and I want to save you.”The fisherman was surprised, and asked why the dragon roared. The dragon said the roar was meant to warn you.The fisherman said “oh thank you.” “Can we be friends?”The dragon said, ROAR,ROAR, and the fisherman asked what that meant. The dragon said it means “yes.”
From that day forward, the dragons would warn any fishermen to be careful of waves on the rocks.
